3 Ways to Use Essential Oils

One of the most common questions I hear from clients is “how do I use essential oils?”

Generally, someone may purchase an oil for a specific use. For example, they might buy tea tree or melaleuca oil to remove a wart and add it to their first aid kit. Once they realize how wonderful essential oils are and see how they can help alleviate symptoms, they want to add them to their daily lifestyle. However, they don’t know how easy it is to get oily!

3 Ways to Use Essential Oils

In general, there are essentially three ways to use essential oils.

1. Topically

This is one of my favorite ways to use essential oils. I like to add them to creams and to baths. For example, if you want to detoxify or to help treat aching muscles from a strenuous workout then you can add lavender oil and Epsom salts to your bath. You can also make body lotions, creams and skin care from pure ingredients.

For example, if you love the scent of vanilla you can make a decadent cream with shea butter or cocoa butter and vanilla oil. You can make shampoo with rosemary oil, peppermint oil, filtered water and castile soap. And tea tree oil can be applied directly to athlete’s foot or acne. There are so many ways to use essential oils topically that you can really have a lot of fun. You can make your own bath and body products, treat topical infections and conditions, and create your own home spa.

While topical use is one of my favorite applications, there are other fun and effective ways to use essential oils.

2. Aromatically

People have been using essential oils aromatically for hundreds of years. Diffusers are excellent for adding scent to your home naturally. The Petal Diffusor and AromaLite Diffusers are my favorite! There are also health benefits when diffusing essential oils. For example, a lavender diffuser next to your bed can help you sleep better. Personally, I like diffusing a respiratory blend which has helped me alleviate the chest congestion and non-stop coughing.

Essential oils can also be smelled right from the bottle! For example, if you’re low on energy or you need a creative boost you might open a jar of tangerine oil or peppermint oil and inhale. The crisp scent can help you feel more awake and energized.

3. Ingestion

Finally, you can eat or drink some essential oils. It’s super-important that you make sure any essential oil you’re considering taking internally is safe for that purpose. Some essential oils should not be ingested. Tea tree oil, for example, is one oil that shouldn’t be consumed. However, many others are perfectly safe. For example, many people take peppermint oil to help aid digestion or to calm anxiety.

Whether you’re putting oil on your skin, in your mouth, or you’re inhaling it, it’s important to make sure that you’re using quality oils. Look for oils that come from reputable companies and contain only Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils.
