I started learning about the gluten free diet in 2006 when I was doing publicity for a Celiac cookbook by one of my favorite mentors on the gluten free lifestyle, Lisa Lundy. The next year my mom won a battle with cancer, then was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. It’s kind of unbelievable how fate puts you exactly where you need to be to help the people closest to you, right?
Then, my own health started deteriorating…
While I’m a size 2 and have always been, it’s important to realize that healthy doesn’t mean skinny – and health definitely isn’t based on your jean size.
Control top underwear was my best friend because of a nonstop battle with bloating. I drank coffee like I needed a caffeine IV just so I could get through the workday without crawling under my desk for nap time. I needed a bag of Kettle Chips every day to satisfy my salt cravings. And let’s not even get started on my chocolate addiction…
I was taking multiple sick days in a row from work. Some days I couldn’t get out of bed because my migraines were so bad. When I was able to get up out of bed, I couldn’t eat anything without getting sick. At night, I would wake with heart palpitations thinking I was having a heart attack – all before the age of 21!
Finally, I was personally diagnosed with Celiac Disease, discovered that I had the gene for lupus and began my strictly gluten free lifestyle.
Even after eating gluten free for years however, I was still exhausted all the time and experienced bloating that never seemed to go away. On top of Celiac Disease, I also have asthma that stems from chronic inflammation, which contributed to excessive coughing. I was tired of relying on my inhaler and having low energy all the time – it was time to take control of my struggling health.
Through my own research, I became more intrigued in the way the body works and how mindset plays a role in our health. I became a Certified Mind Body Fitness Coach and started working with others to share natural solutions as a Wellness Advocate and essential oil lover.
I discovered the power behind letting the body heal itself. I learned about body toxicity and made cleansing and detoxing a seasonal occurrence in my life. That’s when I really saw the wonders that food and lifestyle did for my mind AND my body. I was sleeping through the entire night, my stress and anxiety had gone away, and my belly wasn’t bloated every single day.
My friends and family starting asking me what I was doing to get my “glowing skin” and my balanced presence. Before long they were enrolled in my cleansing program, which turned into seasonal group detoxes. Since then I’ve packaged my program into the Glow from the Gut and have helped clients all over the world detox their bodies every single season.
But I’m not just some random person trying to teach you how to thrive on the latest fad diet or use some harsh system to detox your body. I’m passionate about advocating for Celiac Disease, the gluten free lifestyle and real food transformations, and have traveled over 10,000 miles for Celiac Awareness. The National Foundation of Celiac Awareness even named me a “Celiac Awareness All-Star” after I hosted the first Celiac Awareness Day with the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team.
As the go-to person for Celiac and digestive issues, I have been invited to speak all around the U.S. at events like the Expo East, Gluten Free & Allergen Friendly (GFAF) Wellness Events, Celebrate Celiac, Living Without’s Gluten Free Food Allergy Fest and the GFAF Expo.
What I’ve found after speaking with hundreds of people around the world is that modern medicine and a healthy diet can cover up symptoms, but they do not always get to the root cause of your health issues. It lets us put a bandage on our bloated bellies and move on. But, the truth is, we’re all different. Our bodies are all made in a unique way. There is no “one size fits all” lifestyle or easy button for health and wellness.
We have to get to the root cause of YOUR ailments – the underlying cause of YOUR suffering.
For years I suffered from chronic bronchitis going through multiple prescriptions a year, treating my body with antibiotics, cough medicine, and other synthetic drugs that would simply add wear and tear to my body. If I had a headache, I would take a Motrin. If I had stomach pain, I would eat a Tums. If I was getting a sore throat, I would use a Chloraseptic. You see the pattern here? We live in a society that deals with symptoms but doesn’t spend the time to uncover the real issues and treat them with real ingredients.
