There’s a very good chance that you already know how healthy your gut is. If you have digestive issues, bloating and weight gain, skin problems, and low energy then your digestive system probably needs a little TLC. When it comes to improving your gut health there are a few different approaches.

What are Probiotics?
Probiotics are full of bacteria. You might think of bacteria as a harmful thing, and in some cases that’s true. There are bacteria that cause disease. In fact, there are bacteria in your gut right now that aren’t good for you.
This is why you need probiotics. They restore balance. Probiotics are good bacteria that promote a healthy gut. Scientists aren’t sure how many different strains of bacteria are in the human body, but they do estimate it to be about 100 trillion.
Yes, there are that many different types of bacteria in your digestive system. And when there are too many “bad” bacteria, they can have a significant impact on your health and wellbeing. You can restore and maintain the balance of good bacteria with probiotics.
With probiotics there are two approaches. One is to take a probiotic supplement. The other approach is to eat foods that are fermented and high in naturally good probiotics. These foods include but aren’t limited to:
- Miso (make sure this is gluten free)
- Soy milk with live cultures
- Tempeh (make sure this is gluten free)
- And other fermented and pickled foods like olives.
Generally speaking, it’s better to get your probiotics from real foods than in a capsule. You’ll be able to get a much wider spectrum of probiotics. For example, different yogurt producers use different probiotics in their yogurt. If you buy a variety of yogurts, you’re giving your body an abundance of different options. You’re contributing to the 100 trillion. Additionally, there are many health benefits to getting your nutrients from food. That being said, take care to make sure that you’re eating foods, yogurt specifically, that are low in sugar. Sugar feeds the bad bacteria and can limit your benefit from the probiotic food.
