Without getting super technical, serotonin is a neurotransmitter. It’s a chemical that relays messages from one part of your brain to another. Fun Fact: 5 to 10 milligrams of serotonin are present in the body of an average adult.
Although the brain produces serotonin, about 90% of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut.
So that means your digestive system has lots of work to do to produce all of your serotonin!
Many of my clients come to me after an exhausting process going from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what the heck is going on within their bodies. Along the way, many of them have been diagnosed with depression and put on medication.
But are you really depressed?
We have all viewed the advertisements that claim depression is the consequence of chemical imbalances in the brain, and if we can correct the chemicals, we will feel better. Many researchers believe that serotonin level imbalance may affect the mood, and consequently lead to depression. But, if you’re dealing with a lot of digestive issues and problems in your gut that can possibly be changed with the foods that you’re putting into your body, then do you really need those scary anti-depressants that are messing with the chemical makeup of your body?

Blood serotonin levels are measurable, and it’s been proven that people who suffer depression have lower blood serotonin levels. Right now, doctors aren’t exactly clear whether or not the serotonin dip results in depression or if depression comes from a drop in serotonin levels.
