How I Unwind with Essential Oils

Anxiety is how your body prepares itself to deal with a threat or stressful event. It’s much like our innate ability to go into ‘flight or fight’ mode.  While anxiety is a natural response to stress, it can also occur at any time or much more often than it should – especially if you have an anxiety disorder, experience a traumatic event or live in a stressful environment.

Anxiety can lead to feeling fear, nervousness, nausea, sweating, increased blood pressure and heart rate plus difficulty concentrating, restlessness, irritability and panic attacks.

Before I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, I would wake up in the middle of the night feeling like I was having a heart attack.   Later, I discovered that these were panic attacks that my body was using as a response to my undiagnosed autoimmune disease.

Now, if I ever have anxious feelings, I use my essential oils.  The best essential oil for me is lavender.  Researchers have studied it’s ability to decrease anxious feelings and found a greater improvement in mood and perceived levels of feelings anxiousness over those that received a massage. Other essential oils that might help include orange, lemon, ylang ylang and sandalwood.

I also have some amazing blends that work wonders to relieve anxious feelings like In Tune, Serenity, AromaTouch and Elevation.

Living in New York, I never lived in an apartment that lent itself to a long, relaxing bubble bath.  Since getting a house in New Hampshire, I make it a priority to spend at least an hour in the tub every time we get to escape from the city.  I mean, look at this gorgeous tub! Wouldn’t you?

My favorite way to unwind with essential oils is to add one to two drops of lavender essential oil to 1/4 cup of bath salts and then dissolve them in bath water.
